Angus Umber

Player: Jonathan
Class: Wizard
Ancestry: Angelborn/Fiendborn hybrid (unusual combination)
True Name: Felix Notios
Campaign Status: Active (Session 14)
Role in Party: Primary Damage Dealer, Knowledge Bearer, Tragedy Bearer

Character Overview

Angus Umber carries multiple identities, multiple griefs, and multiple wounds. His true name is Felix Notios, an angel and fiend hybrid who was exiled from Heaven through The Gate as his first memory of this world. His wings were burned by chains during his trial—for a crime he committed out of love: flaring his wings in revolt to protect baby Illiolus from execution.

Now, in Session 14, after reliving his trial through Dr. Kale’s Reverie device, his wings are “unrestrained” for the first time since exile. This is not simply physical liberation—it is spiritual and psychological rebirth. Felix is reclaiming his identity after centuries of suppression.

He is powerful. He is wounded. He carries the grief of a fallen world and the rage of an exile. And he is only beginning to understand what his true nature means.

True Lore: The Angel & The Exile

Celestial Origin

Felix Notios was born as an angel in a realm of order and law. He was not merely a servant spirit—he was part of the celestial hierarchy, existing with knowledge and power beyond human comprehension. He knew Heaven before the coalition took control. He lived through the transformation.

The Uprising & The Exile

Approximately 1,000 years ago, a coalition of angels, demons, and mechanical hybrids seized control of Heaven. Those who resisted were deemed insurrectionists. Illiolus’ parents, Orani and Effiloma, were among the resisters. They were imprisoned, and their infant son was sentenced to death.

When the execution order came, Felix made a choice: he flared his wings in open revolt within the heavenly court.

This act of defiance was not logical. It was not politically expedient. It was pure love—choosing to stand against authority, choosing to defy destiny, choosing to protect a child who was not even his blood sibling but something more: a symbol of innocence being destroyed by power.

The Trial & The Burning

The consequence was swift. Felix was put on trial. The chains they used to bind him were not ordinary restraints—they were hot, burning, consuming. They burned his wings as he stood chained before judgment.

The coalition sentenced him to exile.

The Gate as First Memory

The Gate is literally Felix’s origin point on this plane. Being thrust through it was his first moment of existence in this world. He has no memory of arriving, no sense of transition. The Gate birthed him into Elorea, broken and wounded.

For centuries afterward, he carried the weight of those burned wings—literal reminders of what he had sacrificed. The pain was chronic. The limitation was constant. He was a powerful wizard, but his wings were locked in paralysis, unable to unfurl.

The Reverie Breakthrough

In Session 14, Felix accessed Dr. Kale’s Reverie and relived his trial in full. As he experienced the burning and the judgment in complete sensory detail, something shifted. The trauma was released. The chains, though spiritual, lost their hold.

His wings are now unrestrained.

This is not healing in the sense of pain disappearing. Rather, it is the reclamation of a part of himself he had surrendered. His wings can now move. What comes next—whether he can fly, whether they become a weapon, whether they mark him as different—remains to be discovered.

The Hybrid Nature

Angel and Fiend

Felix is not purely angel. He is also fiend—a hybrid of two apparently opposing celestial forces. This combination is unusual, perhaps unprecedented. It raises questions:

  • What does it mean to be both angel and fiend? Are these categories merely labels imposed by hierarchies, or are they fundamental to his nature?
  • Is his power greater because of the hybrid nature, or more dangerous? Does combining these essences create instability?
  • Why was a hybrid created? This is not random chance; such beings are rare enough to be noteworthy.
  • What do each sides think of him? The celestial hierarchy may view him with suspicion. The infernal realms may see him as traitor. Both may want to use him.

Felix has centuries to ponder these questions. He has not found satisfactory answers.

Current Arc & Plot Hooks

Primary Thread - Unrestrained Wings: Felix’s wings are now free. What does this mean for him? What can he do with them? Is this empowerment or the beginning of something more dangerous? Owen (Illiolus) and Jonathan (Angus) may explore this dynamic together—two characters reclaiming parts of themselves.

Secondary Thread - Destructive Power: Felix carries the knowledge that his magical aptitude is dangerous. The coalition did not execute him partly because killing him seemed risky. Exile was safer. Now, with his wings unrestrained and his power fully recognized, Felix must confront: “Am I a weapon? A tool? Or can I choose something different?”

Tertiary Thread - Illiolus & Sacrifice: Felix carried the grief of Illiolus’ family for centuries. He did not know if Illiolus survived to adulthood. Now he has reconnected with him (whether the party knew this was a reunion or not). This reunion is profound for Felix—his sacrifice was not wasted.

Quaternary Thread - The Orchestrated Trial: Someone within the celestial coalition ensured Felix survived. Someone wanted him gone, not dead. This mysterious benefactor may still be active, still watching, still with plans involving Felix.

Relationships

  • Illiolus: The reason for his exile; the person he sacrificed for; now a party member. This relationship is profound and complicated—Felix carries grief for Illiolus’ family while Illiolus may only recently be understanding who Felix truly is.
  • Hubert Little: Party member; Felix may see his goodness as a kind of innocence he must protect
  • Burburra Bardborn: Party member; perhaps philosophical discussions about power and meaning
  • Teevis Sweet Tea Snik: Party member; grateful for her care; may confide in her about his transformation
  • Fishnet: Party member; recognizes in her a fellow user of dark power; kinship in moral complexity
  • NYC: Party member; suspicious of her; senses she knows more than she reveals
  • The Coalition (Distant): Still active in Heaven; likely still aware of Felix; possibly watching through agents
  • The Mysterious Benefactor (Unknown): Someone in the coalition ensured his survival; possibly reaching out or waiting

Character Development Arc

Centuries Before Elorea

Felix lived as a celestial being before exile. This history shapes everything—he is literally thousands of years older than he appears.

Early Elorea (Centuries 1-850)

Felix survived The Gate’s passage and adapted to this world. He learned to be a wizard. He built a life. But his wings remained burned, paralyzed, constant reminder.

Campaign Sessions 1-13

Felix was part of a party, using his power to protect them, carrying the knowledge of his secret and his sacrifice. He was capable but guarded.

Session 14: The Reverie & Unrestrained Wings

Felix experienced breakthrough. His wings unlocked. He is now in a state of transformation and uncertainty.

Potential Arc Forward

  • Path A - The Redeemed Angel: Felix accepts his angelborn nature and becomes a force for good, using his power protectively
  • Path B - The Fallen Power: Felix explores his fiendborn nature and accepts that he is not purely good; he becomes more dangerous
  • Path C - The Hybrid Paradigm: Felix bridges the angel/fiend divide and becomes something entirely new—neither category fits
  • Path D - The Return: Felix seeks to breach The Gate and return to Heaven to free his people (Illiolus’ parents) or confront the coalition
  • Path E - The Price Extracted: The mysterious benefactor who saved him calls in the debt; Felix must repay an obligation he didn’t know existed

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Immense Magical Power: One of the most powerful spellcasters, with centuries of study
  • Celestial Knowledge: Understands planes, hierarchies, and cosmic forces others can only theorize about
  • Strategic Mind: Centuries of life experience mean he can see far-reaching consequences
  • Now Physically Unrestrained: Unburned wings offer new possibilities and mobility
  • Emotional Depth: Profound capacity for love and loyalty, demonstrated by his original sacrifice
  • Survival: Survived exile, The Gate, and centuries in a hostile world; he is resilient

Weaknesses

  • Destructive Power: His aptitude for destruction was the reason for exile; hard to turn off
  • Isolation: Centuries of carrying secrets create emotional distance
  • Guilt & Grief: Carries unresolved trauma from his trial and Illiolus’ family imprisonment
  • Potentially Unstable: Angel/fiend hybrid nature may have unpredictable interactions
  • Watched: The coalition knows he exists; he is likely being monitored
  • Physical Fragility: Despite power, his body is a wizard’s body—not survivable in direct combat
  • Moral Complexity: Not clear-cut hero; comfortable with destructive choices if necessary

DM Notes

DM Only

Felix’s trial was orchestrated—he was specifically chosen to be exiled because his magical aptitude was considered too dangerous to execute. The coalition faced a choice: kill him and risk celestial backlash or instability, or exile him. Someone—a member of the coalition with vision—ensured his exile through The Gate specifically. Why The Gate? Why not simply cast him to the void?

Someone in the coalition may have arranged for him to survive The Gate passage. The Gate is described as “living”—it is conscious in some way. An entity that can manipulate The Gate is extraordinarily powerful. This benefactor may be an old force, a secret sympathizer to resistance movements, or someone with plans for Felix that are only now coming to fruition.

Felix’s unrestrained wings are not just metaphorical freedom—they are a beacon. The coalition, other celestial powers, and potentially The Gate itself may now be able to track him more easily. His liberation is also exposure.

The angel/fiend hybrid nature is not accident. Someone created Felix as a hybrid. This was intentional. The question of why will eventually demand an answer. Was it to create an unstable weapon? A bridge between factions? An experiment?

Illiolus and Felix’s reunion is charged with meaning. If Felix did not know Illiolus survived to adulthood, learning this now reshapes his understanding of his sacrifice. Did his act of rebellion actually save a life? Did that life grow into something? The emotional weight of this should be explored carefully.

Equipment & Abilities

  • Wizard Spellcasting: Extensive spell repertoire with centuries of study; damage-focused
  • Ancient Celestial Knowledge: Understands planes, creatures, and forces beyond mortal ken
  • Unrestrained Wings: Now mobile and expressive; exact capabilities TBD (can he fly? Use them as weapons? Channel power through them?)
  • Wizarding Focus: Staff, tome, or other focus object
  • Robes or Practical Clothing: Likely marked with signs of celestial heritage (sigils, celestial script, etc.)

Voice & Mannerisms

  • Speaks with formal precision; centuries of living teaches language
  • Often references things the others don’t understand (celestial names, ancient history)
  • When discussing his trial or exile, tone shifts—becomes distant or cold
  • Hands move expressively when speaking of arcane matters
  • Wings (when discussed) are treated with reverence and caution; he is still learning their new freedom
  • Sometimes slips into sadness when thinking of Illiolus’ family
  • Commands respect through presence, not by demanding it

Campaign Significance

Felix represents the cost of resistance to tyranny and the possibility of redemption through sacrifice. His story asks: “What is the cost of standing against power? Can it ever be repaid?”

His connection to Illiolus transforms both their arcs. Together, they represent two exiles rediscovering each other and the possibility of reclaiming what was taken from them.

His magical power is matched by his emotional depth—he is the party’s greatest weapon and their deepest well of old sorrow. The party’s success may eventually depend on his willingness to act, and his redemption may depend on learning there are choices beyond destruction.

The Gate, which is literally his origin point, may become the center of the campaign’s climax. Returning to it—whether to breach Heaven or to understand dimensional mechanics—could be Felix’s ultimate arc.
