House Aurelio

Architects of dynastic alliances, dealers in marriage, power, and carefully calibrated betrayal.

Overview

House Aurelio is a Noble House built on political marriage, information brokerage, and the kind of long-view strategy that operates across generations. While other houses compete on economics or military power, Aurelio competes on bloodlines, loyalty networks, and the leverage that comes from knowing everyone’s secrets.

They appear in Nyc’s Reverie memory—a fragment of her past as Nyxtara Castellan—meeting with House Kestra in a moment that changed her life forever.

Known Members & Positions

The Marriage Proposal

House Aurelio proposed an arranged marriage between one of their heirs and a member of House Kestra to create a political alliance. This was intended to:

  • Merge the political and economic power of both houses
  • Create blood-sworn loyalty between families
  • Lock in mutual defense pacts
  • Divide energy sector profits

The intended Aurelio heir was positioned as the groom.

Nyc (Nyxtara Castellan) — Former Member

Nyc was actually a Kestra operative embedded within Aurelio’s court, positioned as a strategic bride-to-be. Her role was to:

  • Infiltrate Aurelio’s inner circles
  • Gather intelligence on their operations and holdings
  • Potentially acquire leverage or secrets during the marriage
  • Ensure that Kestra benefited disproportionately from the political union

What went wrong: During the secret meeting between House leadership, Nyc discovered something catastrophic—either:

  • The marriage was a trap set by Aurelio against Kestra
  • The groom was actually a weak or compromised heir being used to infiltrate Kestra
  • Aurelio knew about Nyc’s true loyalty and was setting a counter-trap
  • Something else entirely, something grave enough to require poison and flight

The poison: Nyc carried with her a vial of poison. In her Reverie memory, it is associated with this meeting. Whether she used it, was going to use it, or simply carried it as insurance—that detail remains unclear.

House Status: Recovering from a Wound

The arranged marriage never happened. From Aurelio’s perspective, the agreement dissolved abruptly. The intended bride disappeared or died (records are unclear or deliberately obscured). Kestra became more withdrawn and isolated instead of allied. The political maneuver failed catastrophically.

Current situation: House Aurelio is recovering, but the failure left visible marks:

  • Political capital was spent on the arrangement and lost when it collapsed
  • Their reputation for careful planning and control was damaged
  • They became more aggressive and less diplomatic as a result—a house in recovery often is
  • They have developed a personal vendetta against whoever broke the arrangement

If they discover Nyc is alive: The discovery that Nyc survived and has been active in the world would be a serious threat. Aurelio would immediately recognize her as:

  • A Kestra spy who infiltrated them
  • Someone who violated sacred guest-rights and marriage contracts
  • A loose end that knows their secrets
  • A symbol of their failure that can be unmade

This would trigger active Aurelio interest in locating and neutralizing Nyc—making her enemies, in turn, Aurelio enemies.

Playing House Aurelio at the Table

As a Threat to Nyc

If the party includes Nyc and she becomes exposed, House Aurelio becomes one of the most personal and dangerous enemies the party can make. Aurelio operates on blood-vengeance principles and family honor. They have the patience to track someone across continents and decades.

How Aurelio hunts: They don’t send assassins alone. They:

  • Plant agents in every city the party enters
  • Create political obstacles and complications
  • Make allies turn against the party through pressure or leverage
  • Ensure the party knows they’re being hunted (psychological warfare)
  • Close in slowly, gathering evidence and allies before the final move

As a Political Obstacle

Even if the party has no direct connection to Nyc’s history, Aurelio’s recovery means they’re moving more aggressively. They might:

  • Interfere with party objectives as a proxy for other house conflicts
  • Pressure New Vedard’s councils to deny the party licenses or safe passage
  • Create legal complications that force the party to deal with Aurelio intermediaries
  • Test the party’s allegiances by making offers that come with hidden strings

As a Source of Rumors

Aurelio’s information network is vast. The party might approach Aurelio agents (unknowingly or otherwise) to gather intelligence. Aurelio will provide it—for a price, and always with information designed to benefit Aurelio’s position.

Faction Dynamics

Against House Kestra

The failed marriage arrangement poisoned relations between the houses. They are political rivals now, competing for the same alliances and energy contracts. Aurelio wouldn’t mind watching Kestra collapse—it would mean one less powerful house and a lesson to others about trusting Aurelio’s offers.

Allied with Rising Powers

House Aurelio has quietly thrown support behind House Trevani’s expansion, betting that a newly ascendant power will remember who helped them climb. This positions Aurelio to weather their own recovery.

Wary of The Nexus

Like all houses, Aurelio is aware that The Nexus exists and maintains balance. House Aurelio is particularly cautious around Nexus agents because the arranged marriage failure suggests that either:

  • The Nexus knew it would fail and let it happen anyway
  • The Nexus orchestrated the failure as part of their balance-maintenance
  • The Nexus is now monitoring Aurelio more closely than before

DM Secret: The Arranged Marriage and Its True Cost

The arranged marriage between House Aurelio and House Kestra was not a simple political alliance. It was a calculated move in a deeper game:

From Aurelio’s perspective: They knew about Nyc’s true loyalty to Kestra. The arranged marriage was a honeytrap—a way to lure Kestra’s best spy into a vulnerable position where she could be exposed, turned, or eliminated. This would simultaneously:

  • Cripple Kestra’s intelligence capabilities
  • Create a diplomatic incident if exposure became public
  • Allow Aurelio to claim the moral high ground
  • Reverse the balance of power between the houses

From Kestra’s perspective: They sent Nyc because they believed they could outplay Aurelio. They didn’t know about the trap until it was almost too late.

The poison in Nyc’s memory: Nyc poisoned the arrangement—possibly literally, possibly metaphorically—by discovering the trap and escaping it before it closed. The poison vial was either:

  • A backup plan to kill her intended husband if things went wrong (ending the diplomatic incident)
  • A way to sabotage the wedding ceremony itself and create a scandal that would damage Aurelio
  • Insurance that she could use to escape if captured
  • Something else entirely that the party might discover through investigation

The real cost: Both houses knew that the arrangement was a trap. They were testing each other. When Nyc broke it, she didn’t just escape—she proved to Aurelio that Kestra knew about the trap all along. This created a crisis of confidence between the houses that has never fully healed.

House Aurelio believes Kestra will never trust them again. House Kestra believes Aurelio will never forgive them. Both believe the other is plotting revenge. The tension between them creates a power vacuum that other houses—and The Nexus—can exploit.

Nyc as catalyst: The fact that Nyc survived and remains unknown to Aurelio means that their entire understanding of what happened is incomplete. When they discover the truth—that Nyc is alive and has been working against them ever since—it will reframe their entire understanding of that night. They will realize that they didn’t lose because Kestra was cleverer. They lost because they let their prey escape.

That kind of wound doesn’t heal. It festers. And when Aurelio finally finds Nyc, they won’t just want to neutralize her. They will want her to understand, in her final moments, exactly why.
