Celestial Plane

Colloquially called “heaven” by mortals, the Celestial Plane is a dimension parallel to and separate from the mortal world. It is the realm of celestial beings, divine forces, and the complex hierarchies that govern the interaction between the cosmic and the material.

For approximately 1000 years—since the Heavenly Coup—the Celestial Plane has been governed by The Heavenly Court, a regime whose precise nature and intentions are carefully obscured from mortal understanding.

The Basic Reality

Separation from Mortals: The Celestial Plane and the mortal world are not naturally connected. They are fundamentally different orders of reality. Communication between the planes is difficult. Travel between them is extraordinarily rare and requires either tremendous magical power or, historically, access to The Gate.

Existence in the Celestial Plane: The laws of physics operate differently in the Celestial Plane than in the mortal realm. Matter and energy exist in forms not directly analogous to mortal experience. Time moves differently. Distance is not a reliable concept. Individual celestial beings exist in states that are neither purely physical nor purely metaphysical.

The Heavenly Court: The current governing body of the Celestial Plane. Composed of powerful celestial beings who seized power during the Heavenly Coup 1000 years ago. The Court maintains absolute authority over celestial politics, resource distribution, and dimensional policy.

The Heavenly Coup (1000 Years Ago)

The event that shaped current celestial politics. The basic facts:

What Occurred: A violent upheaval within celestial politics resulted in the forcible removal and imprisonment of the previous celestial power structure and the ascension of the current Heavenly Court.

The Consequences: The dimensional membrane between heaven and the mortal plane was destabilized by the conflict. The ruptures that resulted in this destabilization created The Gate—a permanent scar connecting the planes.

The Coverup: The Heavenly Court has maintained strict control over information regarding the Coup. The mortal world’s historical record has been carefully managed; the true nature of the event has been suppressed through careful application of celestial power and resources.

The Court’s Current Structure

The Ruling Council: Composed of the most powerful celestial beings currently in control. Their identities are known only within celestial circles. They operate through intermediaries when dealing with the mortal world.

Specialized Orders: Beneath the ruling council, various specialized celestial organizations handle:

  • Maintenance of the dimensional membrane
  • Observation and management of mortal affairs
  • Resource distribution and celestial infrastructure
  • Military and enforcement functions
  • Archival and informational control

The Bureaucratic Apparatus: An elaborate system of celestial administration that manages the countless beings and forces within the plane itself, maintaining order through a combination of genuine altruism and ruthless control.

The Celestial Population

Divine Beings: The highest order of celestial entities—beings of vast power whose nature is barely comprehensible to mortals. They are rare, and their appearance in mortal affairs is even rarer.

Angels & Lesser Celestials: The bulk of the celestial population. These beings are conscious, intelligent, and possess power beyond mortal capability, but are subordinate to divine entities. Some serve willingly. Some serve under constraint.

Servants & Auxiliaries: Beings created or bound for specific purposes—guardians, messengers, laborers, soldiers.

Prisoners & Exiles: Beings who have fallen from the Court’s favor and are confined within celestial imprisonment or exiled to the mortal plane.

The Prison District

Hidden from the general celestial population, a specialized region of the Celestial Plane serves as a prison for beings whom the Court cannot destroy but cannot allow freedom.

Location & Nature: The precise location of the prison district is known only to those with explicit authorization. The district is sealed with powerful wards that prevent both escape and external communication. It exists in a state of enforced isolation within the Celestial Plane itself.

Political Prisoners: Beings who opposed the Heavenly Coup, who possessed too much power to safely execute, and who represent sufficient political liability that they must be contained rather than eliminated.

Dangerous Entities: Celestial beings whose nature or capabilities pose threat to the Court’s authority, isolated to prevent their influence from destabilizing celestial order.

Orani & Effiloma

Two celestial beings imprisoned in the prison district. Their imprisonment is not publically acknowledged by the Heavenly Court.

Orani: A being of considerable celestial power, formerly in the pre-Coup authority structure. Opposition to the new regime resulted in capture and imprisonment.

Effiloma: Orani’s partner and collaborator in celestial affairs. Also imprisoned, also officially unacknowledged.

Their Significance: Orani and Effiloma are the parents of Illiolus. Their imprisonment means they are lost to him—not dead, but effectively inaccessible, held by a power structure he exists partially outside of.

Their Continued Value: The Heavenly Court maintains Orani and Effiloma alive because their existence provides leverage. They are insurance, collateral, and control mechanism. The Court’s knowledge of where they are imprisoned and their continued existence is information held in reserve—to be revealed or concealed depending on political necessity.

Phylax’s Knowledge: Phylax (a celestial being whose full allegiances remain complex) knows the location of the prison district and the conditions of Orani and Effiloma’s imprisonment. This knowledge is valuable and dangerous in equal measure.

Communication with the Mortal World

Strictly Controlled: The Heavenly Court carefully manages celestial-mortal interaction. Direct manifestation in the mortal realm is rare and typically requires explicit authorization.

Intermediaries: Most celestial-mortal interaction occurs through intermediaries—mortal agents, celestial exiles in the mortal plane, or entities with legitimate reason to move between worlds.

The Gate as Access Point: The Gate provides the primary means for celestial beings to access the mortal world. Use of The Gate is monitored and restricted, but beings with authorization can cross.

The Nexus Connection: The organization called Nexus appears to have celestial connections—whether formal alliance, informal understanding, or something more complex remains unclear. Nexus seems to operate partially as the mortal arm of celestial interests.

Celestial Technology & Magic

Sophistication Beyond Mortal Understanding: Celestial technology operates according to principles that mortals can study but not fully replicate. Celestial magic is woven into the fabric of the Celestial Plane itself in ways that have no direct mortal analog.

The Aetherium Battery: One of the items stolen from New Vedard in the campaign’s central mystery. The battery is a celestial-origin artifact, apparently created in the Celestial Plane and brought to the mortal world for purposes that are not yet clear.

Hybrid Technology: Some mortal technology appears to incorporate celestial principles or celestial components. Whether this is the result of deliberate celestial assistance or independent mortal discovery remains uncertain.

The Party’s Celestial Connection

Angus/Felix

A celestial being exiled to the mortal plane, currently existing as a refugee with no clear path to reintegration. His exile came through formal celestial justice—a trial conducted in the Celestial Plane that resulted in his expulsion to the mortal realm.

His Knowledge: Angus understands celestial politics, celestial hierarchies, and the functioning of the Heavenly Court from direct experience. He has been inside the celestial power structure—and has been ejected from it.

His Position: As an exile, Angus exists in liminal space—celestial by nature but now permanently displaced from the Celestial Plane proper. He carries celestial power and knowledge, but without the authority or resources of the Court.

His Significance: The fact that Angus was exiled through The Gate specifically suggests celestial involvement in whatever strategy The Gate represents. Someone made the deliberate choice to exile him through the dimensional tear, which suggests knowledge, planning, and possible intention.

Illiolus

A celestial being born in heaven, but who has chosen to spend extensive time in the mortal world. His status is more complex than Angus’s:

His Birth: Illiolus was born during the period of the Heavenly Coup or shortly thereafter—specifically in the aftermath of the dimensional destabilization that created The Gate. This timing is potentially significant.

His Parents’ Imprisonment: The fact that his parents are imprisoned in the celestial prison district, and that this imprisonment was perpetrated by the current Heavenly Court, creates a personal stake in celestial politics.

His Choice: Unlike Angus, Illiolus has retained celestial status while choosing to operate primarily in the mortal world. This gives him unique position—access to celestial resources and knowledge, but also commitment to mortal concerns.

His Capabilities: Illiolus understands celestial mechanics, celestial magic, and potentially has access to celestial technology or methodologies. If closure of The Gate becomes necessary, his capabilities may be essential.

The Larger Implication

The party is gradually coming to understand that the crisis they investigate—the theft of the Aetherium Battery, the involvement of the Nexus, the strange motivations of various players—is not a purely mortal affair. It is entangled with celestial politics, celestial resources, and celestial long-term strategy.

The Heavenly Court’s interests, the previous celestial regime’s possible persistence or continuation in hidden form, and the unstable dimensional membrane are all converging toward a crisis point.

The party, through Angus and Illiolus, has direct connection to these celestial forces. Whether they will be empowered to act as agents of celestial will, opponents of celestial authority, or independent actors pursuing their own agenda is not yet determined.

DM Reality

The Celestial Plane is vast, complex, and operates according to principles that the party cannot fully understand—yet. As the campaign progresses, more celestial mechanics, more of the Heavenly Court’s true agenda, and more about the consequences of the dimensional instability will be revealed.

The party is not intended to become entangled in purely celestial politics, but celestial forces will continue to intersect their path. Managing the interface between mortal and celestial concerns will become increasingly important to the campaign’s direction.

The Celestial Plane exists beyond the mortal world’s reach, governed by powers and politics that rarely touch the surface of normal civilization. But through The Gate, through celestial beings like Angus and Illiolus, and through the strange agenda of the Nexus, celestial concerns are creeping into mortal affairs. The party has been touched by heaven’s politics. What they choose to do with that proximity will define the campaign’s trajectory.
