Whimsy Weave Night
A flashback session that surfaced in the party’s investigation. During an event called Whimsy Weave Night—a celebration or festival of some kind held in a sacred location—the party discovered magical obelisks actively draining a Sun Pedal Tree. The obelisks were deliberately placed, deliberately activated, and deliberately drawing the tree’s magical energy in large quantities.
The questions remain: Who placed them? Why? What is the stolen energy being used for? And what are the consequences for the magical ecology of the region?
The Sun Pedal Tree
A living monument to magical history and spiritual significance. The tree is ancient—possibly predating The Gate itself, though this is debated. Its wood shimmers with magical potential. When healthy, it radiates a subtle warmth and a sense of peace that extends for miles around.
The tree is not a normal plant. It is a nexus point—a location where ambient magical energy concentrates naturally, flowing in from the dimensional planes like water flowing downhill. The Sun Pedal Tree is essentially a focal point for planetary magical ecology. It gathers, filters, and redistributes this energy.
Locally, it is sacred. Communities in the area have built homes and infrastructure in careful respect to the tree’s presence. Temples and meditation centers cluster nearby. Pilgrims visit to sit in its presence.
What no one anticipated was that such a focal point of magical energy would become a target for extraction.
The Obelisks
Four Aetherium-based constructs, roughly ten feet tall, arranged in a geometric pattern around the tree. When activated, they began drawing energy from the tree in a systematic, mechanical way.
The obelisks are not magical in the traditional sense—they are not cast spells or shaped divine power. They are machines, operating according to technological principles. They have a rhythmic pulse, like heartbeats, and they glow with a soft, pulsing light as they operate.
The design bears similarity to devices associated with House Kestra—notably the same technological aesthetic that informs The Aetherium Battery research. But they are not identical to any known Kestra device.
This raises a question: Are these official Kestra research devices, or are they independently developed technology that mimics the Kestra design?
The Consequences
Draining the Sun Pedal Tree of its magical energy has consequences that ripple outward:
Local Magical Ecology: The region’s ambient magical potential is decreasing. Naturally occurring spellwork becomes harder. Magical creatures become lethargic or move away. The flow of dimensional energy that usually permeates the area is disrupted.
Magical Weather: Strange phenomena have been reported in the surrounding region. Localized storms that carry magical disturbance. Areas where the sky displays colors that don’t correspond to any natural phenomenon. In one case, a field of crops began growing at impossible rates, then wilted to death within hours. These are symptoms of magical imbalance—the region struggling to adapt to interrupted energy flows.
Spiritual Disruption: Communities that depend on the Sun Pedal Tree for spiritual practice have reported disturbance. Meditations are disrupted. Prayer feels muted. The sense of peace that normally radiates from the tree has faded.
If the draining continues long enough, the tree could be permanently damaged. A nexus point that has been drained of its charge does not simply refill itself—recovery can take years or decades.
The Investigation
The party discovered the obelisks and disabled them during the Whimsy Weave Night flashback. But the identity of whoever placed them remains unknown.
Theories:
-
House Kestra Research: A secret project by House Kestra to study energy extraction from nexus points. Perhaps preliminary research for their larger The Gate-harnessing project. This would suggest corporate espionage or corporate research, depending on whether Kestra placed them or someone stole the technology.
-
The Nexus Experiment: The Nexus organization conducting research on dimensional energy flows and nexus point mechanics. They might be attempting to understand how to manipulate or replicate nexus points.
-
Rogue Mage or Cult: An independent researcher or small group of mages trying to extract magical energy for their own purposes. Less sophisticated than Kestra technology, but still competent.
-
Counterintelligence Operation: Someone deliberately placing Kestra-designed obelisks at a nexus point to frame House Kestra, draw attention to their activities, or disrupt their research program.
The obelisks themselves have been recovered and are being studied. But whoever created them has covered their tracks well. No identifying marks, no signatures, no obvious way to determine their origin.
Teevis’ Herbalism Connection
The party’s druid, Teevis, would have herbalism knowledge that applies here. A Sun Pedal Tree is not merely a spiritual monument—it is a living thing being harmed. The tree’s roots extend deep, its magical systems are complex, and the damage done by the obelisks’ draining would have effects that a skilled herbalist would recognize immediately.
Teevis might be able to:
- Diagnose the extent of the tree’s damage
- Prescribe treatments to accelerate recovery
- Detect traces of who placed the obelisks (through botanical forensics—roots disturbed, certain plants trampled, etc.)
- Sense whether additional obelisks have been placed elsewhere in the region
This mystery is not resolved. It remains an open thread, waiting to be pulled.
The Deeper Pattern
[DM Secret]: If the party investigates thoroughly, they may discover that similar obelisks have been placed at other nexus points across Elorea. Not many—three or four confirmed locations, possibly more unknown.
Someone is systematically mapping and draining the world’s magical nexus points.
This connects to The Gate, which is itself a nexus point of apocalyptic scale and power. If the person or organization behind this project can figure out how to drain a massive nexus point like The Gate, they could:
- Extract enough energy to power a civilization indefinitely
- Potentially destabilize The Gate itself (with catastrophic consequences)
- Map and document Elorea’s magical ecology in ways that no scientist has previously managed
The Whimsy Weave Night investigation is not about a single theft or vandalism. It is a piece of a much larger puzzle about the future of magical power in Elorea.
