The Aetherium Battery

A device capable of storing and releasing enormous quantities of magical energy. According to the calculations of Dr. Allera Solaris, a single battery can power an agricultural settlement for 2,000 years. The technology represents a leap forward in both magical theory and practical application—and it has become the center of a conspiracy that touches corporate espionage, dimensional politics, and the future of magical energy in Elorea.

Also known colloquially as the “Ethereum Core,” though that term is considered crude by scientists.

What It Does

An Aetherium Battery functions as a capacitor for dimensional energy. It absorbs magical potential from the environment or from directed channeling, stores it in a stable state through processes still not fully understood, and releases it on demand.

Unlike conventional magical storage (which tends toward instability and decay), Aetherium Batteries maintain charge indefinitely. A battery charged 500 years ago would still be fully charged today. This stability is the key to their revolutionary potential.

The energy released can power:

  • Community infrastructure for generations
  • Individual spellcasting without personal mana expenditure
  • Mechanical and magical hybrid systems
  • Dimensional stabilization equipment (in theory)

Dr. Solaris estimated that a single large battery could power a city of 50,000 people indefinitely, removing the need for individual solar installation and community power negotiations. It is not quite an infinite energy source, but it approaches the functional equivalent.

The Theft

The battery now at the center of the campaign’s investigation was on display at Dr. Solaris’ exhibition in New Vedard. It disappeared under circumstances that suggest sophisticated theft rather than simple robbery.

What makes the theft particularly odd: Dr. Solaris had set up multiple security layers, all of which failed simultaneously. Security footage is missing for the critical window. The theft appears to have been an inside job—or at least assisted by someone with intimate knowledge of the exhibition’s security protocols.

The party’s investigation has identified four rival scientists with possible motives:

  • Dr. Allera Solaris (the original developer): Behavior suggests guilt despite being the nominal victim. Memory gaps from The Reverie sessions. Footage tampering indicates personal involvement or knowledge of involvement. Wears a medallion with a symbol associated with cultic movements.
  • Dr. Kyle Umbra (Industrial District): Known to have sold security layout information to unknown parties. Claims it was unknowing, sold to someone he believed was a legitimate buyer. Has not been fully interviewed by the party yet.
  • Dr. Anya Petrova (Southern Fields): Owns a robotic elephant of considerable sophistication—an animal that has been identified as the likely smuggling vehicle. Has not been fully interviewed by the party yet.
  • [Fourth Suspect - Unidentified]: A fourth researcher involved in the preliminary stages of battery development. Identity and current location unknown.

The True Story: Corporate Warfare

[DM Secret]: The theft is not what it appears to be.

Aetherium Battery technology was originally developed by House Kestra, a powerful mercantile house with significant interests in magical research and infrastructure development. Dr. Solaris did not independently discover this technology—she was recruited by House Kestra to lead development of their battery project.

The battery on display was a proof-of-concept device—an initial prototype that proved the technology actually worked and could be scaled. House Kestra had much larger plans:

A system to tap directly into The Gate as an effectively infinite energy source. Imagine a massive battery, perhaps built in the canyon itself, that draws on the dimensional bleed of The Gate and converts it into stable, usable magical energy. The economic and political implications are staggering.

But the project has serious problems:

  • The Gate is expanding and destabilizing
  • Large-scale tapping might accelerate that expansion
  • The technology is proprietary and represents enormous competitive advantage

The theft was commissioned to prevent House Kestra from completing this project. The battery was stolen specifically to deny Kestra access to proof-of-concept data and to delay their larger project. Someone—a rival corporate entity, a government faction, or an independent actor—had access to resources and information that allowed them to:

  • Compromise Dr. Petrova’s robotic elephant as a smuggling vehicle
  • Obtain security information from Dr. Umbra (unknowingly or semi-knowingly)
  • Plant false evidence implicating Dr. Solaris
  • Execute a theft of remarkable sophistication

The theft is corporate warfare dressed up as scientific crime.

The Suspects: Deeper Truth

Dr. Allera Solaris: She was personally involved in attempting to recover the battery. She has since been compromised by exposure to The Reverie—she glimpsed memories she didn’t know she had, including moments of doubt about the ethics of the project. She wears a medallion of the Luminant Circle, a cultic movement focused on dimensional ethics and the preservation of The Gate. She may be wavering in her commitment to House Kestra.

Dr. Kyle Umbra: He sold security information in good faith, believing the buyer was conducting independent research. He did not realize the information would be used for theft. He is guilty of poor judgment but not intentional participation. However, his guilt makes him vulnerable to pressure and manipulation.

Dr. Anya Petrova: She owns the robotic elephant, which was used as a smuggling vehicle. She may or may not know this. The elephant was stolen from her for 3-4 hours and returned before she noticed. Alternatively, she could be a knowing participant in the theft, having allowed access to her mechanical creation. This requires investigation.

[Fourth Suspect - The True Thieves]: This suspect has not yet been identified or approached. They are either:

  • A researcher working for a rival corporate entity
  • A government agent working for a nation competing with House Kestra’s interests
  • An independent operative hired by one of the above
  • A member of the Luminant Circle or another group opposed to the Gate-harnessing project on ethical grounds

The Aetherium Substance

Aetherium is a rare material that can be found near The Gate and in other locations where dimensional energy concentrates naturally. In its raw form, it resembles crystallized light—a translucent, iridescent material that hums faintly with magical potential.

When properly shaped and activated through ritual and technology, Aetherium becomes capable of holding dimensional energy in a stable configuration. The process is not fully understood, even by those who practice it. It requires both technical knowledge and something that approaches intuition about the behavior of dimensional forces.

Raw Aetherium is valuable but unstable. A Battery-grade piece has been treated, shaped, and inscribed with formulae that allow it to maintain stability and resist decay. This process is the key to the technology’s effectiveness—and is closely guarded by House Kestra.

The Political Context

Several factions have strong interests in the Aetherium Battery:

  • House Kestra: Wants the battery recovered and their project completed
  • Rival Corporate Houses: Want to prevent Kestra’s monopoly or to acquire the technology themselves
  • Governments: Want to maintain sovereignty over energy production; fear the implications of a single entity controlling infinite energy sources
  • The Luminant Circle and Similar Groups: View the project as spiritually and ethically dangerous, potentially accelerating The Gate’s expansion
  • The Nexus: Unknown position, but likely aware of the theft and its implications

The investigation of the theft is not simply about recovering a stolen object. It is about determining who has the power to reshape Elorea’s energy infrastructure.
